Answers: Community Advice coloradomama writes:My question would be how old is your child and what is the normal cut off for kindergarten Did your child attend preschool? I know from my daughter's experience that the kids that attended preschool were way ahead in "skills" than those who did not. I was really freaked out when they told the parents that kids entering kindergarten had to be reading at a level 3, I was thinking what is that? It wasn't until the end of kindergarten that I found out that meant they understood that there are words on a page. If you child is on the younger side of the cut off, what is the harm in going a year and putting your child in pre-school this year.

This is a touchy area, because you do not want to hold your child back but at the same time, you do not want your child to struggle! I have 3 kids 2 of which have October b-days so they missed the Sept 15 cut off to start school when they turned 5, so they had to wait a whole year and start just a few weeks before their 6 b-day. Now my baby has the April b-day so she will be able to start when she turns 5. However, my husband and I agree that we will see how she is doing in pre-school before starting her in kindergarten. There is nothing worse then watching you child struggle and end up hating school early on, I agree with coloradomama look into a pre-school and wait until next year it is not going to hurt anything. I am not sure about your schools but is she exceeds the skill set next year they will move her up into the 1st grade with your permission. Answer this question: |
