We just starting the school year and my 1st grader is already ending up in tears when it comes to homework. She does fine with reading and writing but when she has to do math she just shuts down. How do I know if this is not a sign of a bigger problem?

This is the time to sit down with your child's teacher to see if he or she can give you some insight about what is going on. It is possible that there is a problem brewing, but it might also be something very simple--like the time of day when she has math. Your child's teacher might want to know about how your daughter did in math in kindergarten. I would definitely NOT jump to any conclusions without finding out more. I would also ask your child. Often times, they can help you understand what is going on inside their brain!

Make it fun try using a reinforcer unless she is honestly struggling with the owrk. But if she can do it then reinforce the good behavior when she sits down to do her work and use lots of praise while she is doing it.
