Schoolfamily.com - Helping parents help their kids succeed at school

I can't believe the difference in homework from 3rd grade from 4th. We've only been in school a couple weeks and already my daughter is forgetting assignments and having melt downs. I am not sure how much I should be helping and reminding her.

If your child is having meltdowns and forgetting assignments, it is probably time to intervene on her behalf. Call her teacher and ask her how the assignments are given to the children. She needs to have an assignment notebook where she writes down everything that is due, and her teacher needs to confirm that she has everything written down correctly before leaving each day. If her teacher is not willing to do this, maybe she can compare her notebook to another student's. I would suggest also that you try to welcome her home each day with some "down" time--do something fun together and have a healthy snack. School is stressful for many children and they need time to unwind when they get home. She also needs a quiet, distraction-free place to work (no TV or phone). She may need encouragement while she is working. Be careful, also, that she does not have too many extra activities during the week. Many children are truly over-booked. I wish you luck and hope she gets this better under control very soon.
