My son is in 6th grade which means he is heading to middle school next year. As the years goes on I am getting more nervous because he is so disorganized. I don't know he is going to stay on top of it all next year and his 6th grade teacher babies them Anything I can do at home to get him ready?

Hi TerryD7- Does it make you feel any better that many, many parents have the same concern about their soon-to-be middle schoolers? : ) The good news is that there are ways that you can help your middle schooler get organized and learn to manage their homework. We have a great article on how to help your child get organized. I would also suggest that you make a point over the summer to give your son projects that require organization and accountability. Something as simple as coming up with a packing list for what you need in the car for a family road trip/vacation will give him practice for next year. And the advice that you'll probably hear from the middle school principal is: guide your child but let them take charge... even if it means they fail at a task. Middle school is the time to figure this all out and experience natural consequences. The last piece of advice is to compare notes and share stories with other parents of middle school parents.
