The best way to have them build their vocabulary is to have them read, ideally with a dictionary handy! One fun thing you could do this summer is to set a goal of learning at least one new word a day. I'm a huge fan of the Thesaurus (maybe that's why ended up majoring in English in college!) Have your kids take turns picking a word out of the Thesaurus and see how many synonyms they can name before looking at the book or site. If you have a smart phone you could also download a vocab game to help them boost their vocab. Key is to keep it fun!
