Understanding Learning Styles

Most people use a combination of learning styles but have a clear preference for just one. Understanding your child’s learning style can make it easier for you to communicate with your child and can help reduce frustration at homework time.

  • If your child selected mostly auditory learning statements, he is good at absorbing information from spoken words and may understand instructions better if they are read aloud.

  • If she chose mostly kinesthetic learning statements, she prefers to be active while studying and may not be able to focus while sitting still.

  • If your child picked mostly visual learning statements, he benefits from seeing information on a chalkboard or in an illustration and may grow impatient listening for long periods of time.

Adapted from “Learning Style Survey for Young Learners” by Andrew D. Cohen and Rebecca L. Oxford and “Learning Style Survey” by Maureen McKay | (Learning styles key) Auditory: statements 2, 6, 9, 11; Kinesthetic: statements 3, 4, 8, 12; Visual: statements 1, 5, 7, 10

  6. The principle thing in the learning process is the formation of still or action pictures in the imaging part of the brain. A picture tells a thousand words and a thousand words should form the same picture in the brain. Thus visual and auditory learner should be able to form the same picture and recall its parts.
This is where the problem may exist. The first objective is to form patterns of information composed of "links" that serve as reminders of what is in the picture stored in the brain. If the student is not paying perfect attention, than chances are that he/she might wind up with a "blackout" that may distort imaging process causing the learning process to stumble. If there are too many distractions in the mind of the student, then this may be the problem and not basically the learning style. - rocky escobedo
  7. Through taking innovative classes while I was teaching, I learned about Learning Styles. It made so much sense to me that I started testing my kids in class, with parents' permisssion, and it enabled me to reach children who were having problems learning. I have continued with this concept. We all acknowledge that we are different, so why is it so hard to accept that we all learn differently? Visual learners do form pictures in their brains and are able to remember that info. (That's me) But auditory learn more easily if they hear info. and it stays in the brain. Auditory learners are in the minority, but a high percentage of teaching is auditory, so that is one reason so many students have problems learning. I have had some students who were kinesthetic in the extreme, and when taught in that way they learned and retained info.

  23. I think that taking this quiz is very interesting and helpful, because you don't really know how you learn best off the top of your head. When you see the options right in front of you, you understand things that you may not have before. For instance, I really dont notice that I'm playing with my pencil when I'm thinking at my best, but when i saw it on the quiz I thought, "Hey, I guess i DO do that." I still think there are more precise learning style quizes, though. I have taken quizes that are much more in depth and specific. (and i agree with those of you that have said things were a lot harder in the 70s when people were much more ignorant to people that didn't just learn one way. --Elizabeth - Elizabeth
