Kids and Cell Phones

Each school year, it seems more and more kids head off to school toting cell phones. I imagine the old school pay phone (20 years later, I can still remember the calling card code I used daily!) will soon be going the way of the dinosaur.

So of course, we've covered the trend with this piece on kids' cell phone buying tips. I also found this video from the New York Times technology expert (these guys are always following our lead it's getting tiresome) pretty good. Good to see that the phone companies are coming up with just-for-kids phones so that we parents can benefit from the safety and convenience elements while still guarding against the always-plugged-in temptations that abound these days.

The issue of kids getting cell phones earlier and earlier will continue to become a problem. when all phones have GPS in them, parents will want them to have cell phones so they can check to see where they are at any given moment. I agree that 8 years old is too young to have a cell phone. And now with the problem of "sexting" this whole could get really out of hand. Maybe the trend will shift, who knows.

I think parents are getting phones for their kids way too early. I have an 8 year old and she tells me half her class has cell phones. Then I read on the internet that 35% of tweens (ages 8-12) have cell phones of their own. This is just too young. Why get them addicted to technology at such an early age? They have their whole life to be talking and texting. Let them just enjoy their childhood without all the technical gadgets.
