Mommy Business Cards
August 19th, 2008 by tsullivanHere’s an interesting twist — do you have a business card for your mom career? I can see both sides to this one. On the one hand - especially as the new school year approaches — there’s a convenience to simply handing over the contact info all those times you’re signing up for the PTO or PTA event or the band parents or the birthday party list or you name it. On th other, has it really come to this? Have we so businessed-out the family life around town that we all need DayTimers and business cards for the carpool line? Not sure… interested in your thoughts.

My daughter has autism, so every now and then I get a batch of business cards printed with a couple sentences about autism (focusing on the parts most likely to get us stared at/kicked out of public places).
I never would have thought of calling/business cards for *me* otherwise, but they really do come in useful IF no one has taken them out of my purse and used them in art projects. They’re especially useful for the kids-hit-it-off-at-the-park or run-into-hard-to-find-friend-at-the-store contexts.
I use pictures of my kids and I sure don’t want people dropping by the house unannounced, so I keep the info very brief: my name & email address. I can write in anything else by hand if needed.

I thought of something like this last year, as I am a school bus driver. I always at the beginning of the year send a welcome back letter and also give all my info, as I am asking them for theirs. I think parents knowing how to get a hold of me makes them feel a tad bit better with the safety of their children and peace of mind that I am open enough to tell them all about me. I think having this available to give is great for the PTA, office staff, teacher and even the bus driver. PLEASE parents remember, we bus drivers do not get phone numbers or anything from the schools, say you are running late.. call the driver, pull his/her card out… let them know what you want them to do. Many children are returned to schools everyday for a missing parent at stops. This is a awesome and Cool Idea!!!!!!!!!!!
