Buying Cell Phone

I'm finally breaking down and purchasing a cell phone for my 13-year-old daughter. Any suggestions on what kind of phone and plan to get, that is appropriate for her? I'm really concerned about her access to the web on most phones. Also, how do I make rules on her usage, when she has the phone in her possession most of the time?

Hi Janelle- About the rules for usage, one thing that I wish someone had told me (rather than figuring it out the hard way ; ) is to make a rule that when your child goes to do homework or they go to bed, they leave their phone on the kitchen counter or somewhere away from where they are working. Less distractions! ~ Lisa

I am pretty sure that you can disable web access on phones -- that's a good question for the place you're buying your phone, tho. So before we gave a phone to our middle schooler we sat down and showed her a bill so that she could see the level of detail and that we would know everything about her useage- when she called, how long she talked and who she talked to! Then we laid out the rules, like no calls after 10pm, obviously not during school, etc. So far so good.
