No recess for 2nd graders some days- can I talk to the teacher about this
Lately my son's second grade teacher has been skipping recess for the kids. I really think this affects my son's ability to concentrate. He needs that time to run around and blow off steam. Can I talk to his teacher about this. How should I approach her?

Dear JD2000,
Most teachers appreciate the value of recess, and how it benefits learning! Did your son say why recess was canceled? Is the teacher using the time for make-up work? Is it a schedule change coming from the office? Is the class being disciplined for some reason.? Get as much information from your child as you can, then ask for a conference with the teacher. At the conference ask the teacher why the recess schedule has been altered, and see if that matches the information from your child. There is probably a logical explanation. If not, ask to have a conference with the principal to further discuss the issue. - Connie
JD2000- That is definitely a tough one -- Can't imagine my son in 2nd grade without a recess! This article about how boys learn supports that fact: http://www.schoolfamily.com/school-family-articles/article/854-how-boys-learn". Do you have a parent teacher conference coming up? You could bring up your son's learning style and say how it really helps him to get physical activity so he can concentrate. If you don't have a conference soon, then email her to set up a meeting. Lead with positive feedback, then address your issues.I think the key is to bring it up without sounding accusatory. Anyone else have some advice? Please keep us posted JD! ~ Lisa
