I have four children. My oldest (5th grader) does his homework right after school. If he has more than an hour I have to kick him out of the house to relax his brain. My second child (third grader) is not quite as motivated to do homework. Sometimes I make him do his work right after school and sometimes I let him go outside to play for a while. It just depends on how he feels. My children know that homework comes before anything else but I also realize how important it is for them to be able to concentrate on what they are doing. If they need a break from reading and homework then I'm all for it. I really think it depends on the child!

I do my h.work whenever i feel like it, because if i do it when i don't feel like doing it then i do worse, but that doesn't matter, cuz i get honors! But i have to start my hm.work before 8pm for me so it ranges frrom 3 to 8pm. Sometimes i need to rest and sometimes i feel like doin hm.work and somtimes i fell like reading. =)

I have three boys and i tryed to give them an hour to relax there mind and it didnt work. When it was time to get back to the homework everybody wanted to pout and whine and take forever, so now when they come in they have a snack and tell me bout there day and start on their homework and then they go outside to play basketball and football with friends.

While in elementary, my oldest did her homework right when she got home. But then as she got older and busier, she did it at bed time. My middle child was always burned out and mentally fatigued when she got home from school. She was, and still is, a morning person. She liked to wake up early and do her homework before school. She's in college now and still does her best work before 7 am. My youngest... we're still trying to find the time of day when she's at her most cooperative and eager to learn. Translation: She does it when we sit on her and make her do it!

My son is in 1st grade and dose his home work in the evening before dinner and sometimes before and after dinner depends on him. I think in his case time to relax after school with a hike or general play works, his grades could not be better and he's happy , so it works for us.

I give my kids an hour of play time after school to let out some of their energy. I find they focus better when they aren't as wound up from sitting in a classroom all day.

My son is in 6th grade & my daughter is in 8th grade, it's hard to find a happy medium? My son has after school activities everyday from 4:15 / 6 PM, he doesn't get home until 3:45, so he has to come home change, grab a snack & go, then after he comes home about 6:15/6:30 we eat soon after / then homework / shower /bed! His grades are very good, but sometimes he gets very frustrated ( so do I ) He Loves what he's doing & it's alot for an 12 yr to stick with along with keeping his grades & school work as # 1. I would like to figure out some kind of schedule, or routine to make it less crazy, but have not really figured it out quite yet!
My daughter, she just comes home & does her H.Work, she gets Honors & I really don't have to get after her at all. So I just need to figure how to get thing's a little less crazy & alot more organized, somehow. -- Leanne

If you do it right after school you won't forget about it and not do it at all

I have a daughter in kindergarten and I always let her have a break after school to have a snack, play, or watch television. I understand that right after school would be a great time because it will be still fresh in their brains but I know I need a break so I in turn give her a break then we sit down together and complete the homework. My daughter has excellent grades in Kindergarten and this works fine it might change as she gets older but for now I say give them a break then go over what they studied in class and complete the assignment.
