Recommended Reads That Build an Interest in Science

Your child can learn more about science while reading for pleasure. Many books that middle schoolers might enjoy have scientific themes or content.

Suggest that your child try one. Don’t think, “My child does not like science. She would never read these.” Fiction books about science are a great way to change your child’s mind about the subject.

Here are some authors and titles that middle school teachers recommend:

  • Jean Craighead George. Ms. George’s books include The Missing Gator of Gumbo Lumbo, Who Really Killed Cock Robin? and The Talking Earth. These books focus on nature and the environment. Many middle schoolers are interested in these themes.

  • Theodore Taylor. Middle school teachers love Taylor’s The Cay. This book offers history as well as science. It’s about a young boy living in the Caribbean during World War II. This is a good book to read aloud with your middle schooler.

  • Jules Verne. Some of Verne’s books are included on “classics” reading lists as well as being good science reads. Middle school teachers like Journey to the Center of the Earth and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
