Whatever the problem, children in middle school still need their parents’ help in solving it. And to find the best solutions, parents often need to talk with the school.

You may want to call for a meeting with the teacher, counselor, other school staff and your child. To prepare for the meeting:

• Make a list of your concerns. Include what you feel might be causing the problem.

• Talk with your child to gain her view of the problem.

• List what you think your child needs at school. For example, does she need more challenge? Firmer limits? Help in getting organized?

At the meeting, involve your child. Approach the teacher as your partner, and be realistic.

It takes time and work to solve problems. Make it a goal to come out of the meeting with a plan of action. Set a future date to share with each other how the plan is working.
