Phonics is a method of reading instruction that emphasizes sounding out words. This term became politicized in the 1980s and 1990s, so some teachers now refer to the practice as “decoding.” Most students today are taught to decode words. Some students are able to learn to read without breaking down words into each individual sound; for others, reading doesn’t come so easily, and learning to decode seems to be crucial to their understanding.
