Here’s an idea for a fun research project that will encourage reading. Your child can create a “USA Scrapbook” by writing the name of a state at the top of each page of a notebook.
Organize the states by regions or alphabetically. Then divide each page into spaces for the state flower, tree, and bird. You can also add other categories.
Your child can find all the information in the following library resources: an encyclopedia, atlas, individual books or the Internet.
Draw or paste pictures of the plants and wildlife that represent each state.
Keep this project simple, and you’ll have a scrapbook of the entire USA!
Learn more about the USA online at www.50states.com and www.geobop.org.
The book series, America the Beautiful, (Children’s Press/Scholastic) is also a valuable resource.
