But simply telling children to “be polite”
doesn’t work. Kids need to know exactly what politeness means. Polite people do these things:
• Show respect for others’ feelings and belongings.
• Think about how their actions
• Behave kindly to others.
• Eat, speak and move pleasantly.
• Ask instead of demand.
• Greet people with a smile.
Talk with your child about the different ways to be polite. Then practice being polite in various situations. For example, pretend you’re meeting someone new. Make believe you’re out to dinner at a fancy restaurant. Or imagine you disagree with a friend.
Also, talk about why people should be polite. What if everyone were rude? What if everyone were courteous? It’s challenging for kids to be polite. But practice makes it easier.
