It’s a long process, though, and he will need lots of help from you.
Show your child how to:
- Share. Say, “You’ve had that ball for a long time. Now Chris wants to play. Let’s set the timer and when you hear it go beep, it will be time to let Chris use the ball.” Reassure your child that the other child will just be using the toy, not keeping it.
- Think of others. “Look, you have two cookies. Abby doesn’t have a cookie. She looks hungry! What should you do?” If your child doesn’t know, or refuses, supply the answer. “Abby needs a snack, too. Please give her a cookie.”
