A happy four-year-old is overjoyed. An angry
one is furious and may lose control. Your child may need help with self-control. All feelings, including anger, are okay. It is what you do with your feelings that matters.
Encourage your child to:
• Exercise. “You’re so upset now. Let’s run fast around the yard. We’ll try talking again when we’re done.”
• Use words. Talking about angry feelings is the best way to deal with them. Practice saying, “I’m really angry now!”
• Let it out on something she cannot hurt. Suggest she get crayons and paper, and scribble away. Or have her punch a sofa pillow.
