Next time you’re in the produce aisle, consider talking about the following topics with your child:

• How foods grow. Various fruits and vegetables grow in different ways. For example, oranges grow on trees, blueberries grow on shrubs and carrots grow underground.

• How many items to buy. Ask your child to help you count produce items. You might say, “We need three plums. Let’s count them.”

• Colors and shapes. Mention the different colors and shapes you see, such as red apples, yellow grapefruit and round grapes. Name a color or shape and have your child find a fruit or vegetable that matches it.
