It is many skills that your child will learn after daily practice for a period of years.
Promote skills that can help your child get into the habit of acting responsibly. Encourage your child to:
- Tell the truth. If your child breaks a rule, and admits it, let her know you expect her to follow the rules. But finish by praising her for telling the truth. Telling the truth is an important way of accepting responsibility.
- Use manners. Teach your child to say “please” when she asks for something, and “thank you” when she receives it. Have her draw a thank-you picture when she receives a gift. Mail it to the sender.
- Pitch in. Everyone should help the family by doing household jobs. Even a young child can put her clothes in the hamper, pick up her room, or dust furniture.
