But does he know why? Young children are ready to learn that healthy foods build strong, sound bodies and minds. They are also ready to help select some of their own healthy foods.
To teach your child about healthy food choices:
- Go shopping together. As you choose each item, name it for your child. Also name the kind of food it is, such as fruit, vegetable or meat. Talk with your child about whether it is a food he can eat often, or if it is a food he can eat once in awhile, for a treat.
- Allow your child to help you prepare a healthy meal. Let him help toss vegetables in a salad or pick a fruit for dessert.
