Flash Cards for Math Fact Families

Sometimes, math facts come in families. When children are learning that 7 + 5 = 12, it’s just as easy to learn that 5 + 7 also equals 12.

Three-corner flash cards can help students learn these fact families. Here’s how to use them:

Cut an index card diagonally in half to make two triangles.

Take one triangle. In each corner, write a different number—for example, 12, 5, and 7.

Have your child look at the card and say all the math facts that it represents with those three numbers. In this example, the math facts would be:

  • 5 + 7 = 12
  • 7 + 5 = 12
  • 12 - 7 = 5
  • 12 - 5 = 7

These cards also work when your child is learning multiplication and division.
