Guessing Games Build Mental Math Skills

This game will increase your child’s ability to do math problems in her head.

Think of a number for your child to guess. For a younger child, this can be a number up to 20. If your child is older, go as high as you both agree to.

To play, have your child guess a number. You say “higher” or “lower” depending on if the number is greater or lesser than your number. Have your child keep trying until he gets the right number.

To help him out, you might give hints. For example, “Greater (or lesser) by at least seven.” For an extra challenge, limit the number of guesses your child can make to five or 10 guesses.

After your child guesses the number, switch roles. Let him pick a number and you guess.
