Here are some tips on how you can help your child learn to spell better:
Help your child pay attention to how words are spelled. When reading aloud, tell her to stop once in a while to look at words she’s reading.
Play spelling games together. Scrabble, Boggle, UpWords, or even an old favorite like hangman can give your child practice in spelling correctly.
Make sure your child studies spelling regularly. Set aside 15 minutes or so in every study session to review spelling words.
At the beginning of the week, test your child on the spelling words. Spend the most study time on the words she doesn’t know.
Have your child make a tape. Have her say “Piece,” then wait 10 seconds or so. Then have her say “Piece, p-i-e-c-e.” Making the tape can help her review the words. The tape will also free you from spending a lot of time on spelling words.
Have your child write spelling words as well as say them out loud.
