10 Ways To Help Your Child Be Successful in the New Year

The break from school will be over soon. Use these ideas to help get your child back into the swing of things at school after vacation ends.

Help Your Child Start the Year Right

  1. Remind your child that school is important and that you expect she will do her best.

  2. Help your child set some new goals for improving his school performance—like bringing a math grade up or doing homework on time.

  3. Make a new schedule for after-school activities. Include adequate time for homework.

  4. Restock your child’s study area with necessary school supplies.

  5. Help your child clean out his backpack and school notebook. Sort and file old papers.

  6. Reset limits on TV time.

  7. Revive a family reading time.

  8. Reestablish a reasonable school-night bedtime.

  9. Get your child back into the habit of getting ready the night before school. Set out clothes, pack lunch, get papers signed, and put the backpack by the front door.

  10. If you have questions or concerns, call your child’s teacher now.
