Here are six ways to give children practice at home:

  1. When you go shopping, see if your child can recall where the bread is, or on which aisle the sugar is located.

  2. Cut out five items from a grocery store ad. Show your child how much each costs. Then see if your child can remember the cost of each. (Once she can remember five, try six, then seven and so on. Have her beat her own record.)

  3. Show your child, step by step, how to do something. Then ask him to repeat the steps to you.

  4. Read a story. Then have your child tell it, in detail, back to you.

  5. Teach your child a new song. Sing it together. Then have your child sing it on his own.

  6. Let your child view a bunch of small household items or toys you’ve displayed on a table. Then put them in a bag. Bring each item out of the bag after your child names it. She gets a prize when she names them all.
