Make Math Part of Everyday Life

In the home, math is involved in everything from keeping a budget to making a recipe.

Even leisure time activities involve math—what would baseball be without batting averages?

Teach your child to enjoy math and to make math a part of her everyday life. Here are suggestions:

  • Encourage your child to use math while she eats. A child can learn about fractions by dividing a sandwich into fourths. She can cut sandwiches into geometric shapes.

  • If you have a calculator, teach your child to use all the functions. Let your child practice by double-checking the supermarket receipt.

    Q:
How much time online? - Curious to hear how much other parents of elementary and middle school kids let their kids spend online and watching TV during the week?
  • As you’re going grocery shopping, encourage your child to use coupons. Ask, “If this coupon gives us 25 cents off, what will the price be?”
