The first thing you see is
a misspelled word. Instead of pointing that out first, use the PNP method to make it easier for your child to hear your negative comments.
PNP stands for Positive-Negative-Positive. Start with a positive comment: “You have such an interesting first sentence. It makes me want to read more.”
Then add your negative comment followed by a positive statement: “I do see one word you spelled incorrectly. Overall, I think this is a great start.”
By giving your child positive as well as negative feedback, you’ll make it more likely that your child will ask you for help again.
