Today, the U.S. population is the world's fattest. Up to 30 percent of today's teens are overweight and as many as 15 percent may be obese. Studies show most of those overweight teens will become overweight adults.
What can you as a parent do to help your child make healthy food choices? Here are some suggestions:
- Make learning about nutrition a family project. Spend some time with your family reading books and choosing recipes. Get in the habit of reading labels.
- Give your child some choice in the foods your family eats. Give your son or daughter a shopping listêbut add, "Why don't you choose some foods we'll all enjoy."
- Teach your child how to prepare nutritious foods.
- Set a good example. Think about what you eat. Make changes and talk about them with your teen or preteen.
