Here are some ways to help your child see that writing is part of everyday life.

  • Ask your child to help you by writing your shopping list. Or, ask your child to check a list and add some favorite items.

  • Do you have a day of errands? Ask your child to help you create a “to do” list.

  • Encourage your child to record his own activities on the family calendar. Small children can draw pictures of activities.

  • Teach your children to take telephone messages. Make sure there's paper and a pencil by every telephone.

  • Set up a family message center. (The refrigerator works just fine.) Have this be a place where everyone checks in every day to read and leave notes.
