As students grow older, homework becomes more demanding. Some kids have trouble staying focused. If this happens to your child, these steps can help:

  • Pinpoint the problem. Talk with your child about it. Notice how she studies. Can either of you tell what distracts her? The difficulty may be easy to fix, such as keeping important supplies handy.
  • Practice. Do activities that involve concentration. For example, read books. Ask questions like, “What do you think will happen next?” Work on puzzles together. Compliment your child’s success.
  • Contact the teacher. Ask her for suggestions. Explain that you want to help at home.
