Take this challenge with your teen. Every day for a week, each of you read the editorials in your daily newspaper. This is usually only about 15 minutes of reading or less. Then, pick a time each day to discuss what you read.
With what do you agree? With what do you disagree? If you could tell the author one thing, what would it be? On what did the author fail to comment that you find important?
Reading something and then analyzing it is the basis of critical thinking. And critical thinking is what makes learning go beyond memorizing.
