Tell her she can do anything—but education is the ticket to getting there.
To help your teen discover a sense of purpose, have her:
• Imagine. What important thing does she see herself doing someday? How can she get there?
• Write. Writing down her goals and dreams makes it more likely that she will achieve them. Have her write her dream down on paper. She should carry it with her and look at it often.
• Start the day with, “Today I will … .” Planning and accomplishing two or three simple things each day can motivate your teen to work on broader goals. Her daily goals could include being on time to math class, spending half an hour practicing for an upcoming speech, or writing in her journal for 10 minutes.
