So you aren’t sure what your teen should be studying. And you aren’t sure how to pay for college if your teen does get in.
A mentor can help. Most mentors are people who have been successful and who want to help others be successful, too. A mentor may give your teen the extra help that encourages him to reach that goal.
Mentors work one-on-one with teens. They share what they did to reach their own goals. They can help your teen make a plan to reach his goal of getting into college. What classes should he take? Are his grades good enough?
Mentors can help teens think of ways to overcome obstacles. If he needs to get his grades up, they might suggest a tutor. Or they could work with him on a subject where he needs help.
Many schools have mentor programs. Talk with your school to see if there is a mentor program already set up in your school.
Religious organizations may also have mentor programs. Organizations like America’s Promise (http://www.americaspromise.
org (10/00)) also link youth with mentors.
