But it’s not too soon to be
thinking about her schedule for next year.
As a parent, be aware of the courses your teen chooses. But don’t choose for her. Encourage her to take courses that challenge her. High school courses are not just about what your teen is learning now. They should be a foundation that will help her in the future.
These academic courses are the basis of a solid education:
• Math.
• English.
• History.
• Science.
• Language.
Make electives meaningful. There’s nothing wrong with a “just for fun” class once in awhile. But in general, electives should support the basic
program.
Academics count even if teens don’t plan on college. Encourage your teen to fill at least half her day with academic courses. She could spend the other half in vocational or technical courses in her field of interest.
