Here’s how:

Ask teachers for suggestions. Your teen’s teachers may be able to tell you about books and magazines other teens have enjoyed. They can recommend authors. They can help your teen pick out books from the school library.

Visit book fairs. If your teen’s high school sponsors a book fair, make sure to go and take him with you. If it doesn’t, look for book fairs at other schools, even elementary schools. Ask your teen to go and spend just 15 minutes looking through the books. Encourage him to choose one he’d like to read.

Bring books into your teen’s social life. Make a contract with your teen and a couple of his friends: If they’ll all read the same book and tell you about it, you’ll have them over for a movie night, complete with snacks of their choice.
