But most teens tune out when the financial news comes on TV. Here’s a way to help your teen learn more about stocks.

Create an imaginary stock purchase. Start with things your teen knows. Is there a “hot” brand of shoes or clothes? Maybe that company will make a big profit. What is your teen’s favorite store? Car? Restaurant?

Now do some research. Find out about the company. Your teen can do online research or read about the companies in the newspaper.

Then help her make some choices. Suppose you had $1,000 to invest. Where would she spend her money? Every day, she can check the market to see whether she’s made or lost money. When she has money to invest later in life, she’ll already have an idea of how the market works.
