Make your back-to-school night inviting

Are you looking for new ways to make back-to-school night more meaningful and interesting for parents?

Consider adapting some of the following ideas: » Make parents feel welcome. Set aside several evenings the week before to call each parent with a personal invitation.» Allow parents to walk around the classroom. Display students’ work on their desks. Be available to answer questions. Schedule individual conferences if parents request.» Ask parents to fill out a brief questionnaire—specific things they would like you to know about their child, the best time to contact them, etc.» Ask parents to write special notes for their children to find when they arrive in class the next day. Provide note cards and markers.» Display photos of each of your students. During the first weeks of school, take photos of the students engaged in various learning tasks. Then ask them to write captions for the pictures and create an “Our Class at Work and Play” bulletin board.
