Make Sure Your Middle Schooler Keeps Active

Too many kids today are overweight and out-of-shape, because they don’t get the exercise they need.

They get some exercise in P.E. classes at school, however parents shouldn’t expect P.E. to provide all the physical activity children need. A recent study showed that in the average P.E. class, students were physically active less than 10 percent of the time. Plus many students go to P.E. only two or three times a week.

To help ensure your child is getting enough exercise:

  • Do your homework. Find out how much and how often your child exercises in gym class. Ask what she’s doing in gym class and if there’s anything she can do at home to reinforce the lessons.
  • Encourage your child to be physically active every day. Suggest she join a basketball or swim team. Exercise together.
  • Offer to take your child and friends to parks and other places they can play. Start a car pool.
  • Be a role model. Make exercise a part of your daily routine.

    I liked your comments about us parents exercising with our kids as well as being good roll models. They definitely look up to us and try to discover what "normal" is.

    I say we make healthy eating and fun family fitness normal!
