Watching TV news and reading newspapers can help your child practice. Try this plan:
-
Choose a short to medium-length newspaper story to read aloud to your child. Ask him to listen carefully and take written notes.
-
When he is done, have him skim his notes and tell you the main idea or the point of the story. (For example, in a sports story, the main idea is to tell you who won the contest.)
-
Next, ask him for supporting details of the story. These are smaller bits of information that make the main idea more credible or interesting.
-
Talk with your child about his answers. Do you agree with him? Why or why not?
-
Finally, watch a TV news story together. With your child, take notes about the main idea and supporting details. Talk about and compare your ideas.
