Watching TV news and reading newspapers can help your child practice. Try this plan:

  1. Choose a short to medium-length newspaper story to read aloud to your child. Ask him to listen carefully and take written notes.

  2. When he is done, have him skim his notes and tell you the main idea or the point of the story. (For example, in a sports story, the main idea is to tell you who won the contest.)

  3. Next, ask him for supporting details of the story. These are smaller bits of information that make the main idea more credible or interesting.

  4. Talk with your child about his answers. Do you agree with him? Why or why not?

  5. Finally, watch a TV news story together. With your child, take notes about the main idea and supporting details. Talk about and compare your ideas.
