Graphic novels use pictures and words like comic books. But they offer more than just entertainment.

They are book-length stories. Many address current, relevant, and complex social issues. They cover and stimulate reading in diverse genres of literature. These include mystery, fantasy, science, historical fiction, biography, and self-help.

Some graphic novels are more literary than others. Not all are suitable for middle schoolers. And not all students will even be interested in graphic novels. Check to make sure the content is appropriate before your child reads one. Ask your librarian to show you where they are shelved and help you find some that your child would enjoy.

Graphic novels can also be great to motivate students who read English as a second language or read below grade level. Some sure reads include the following books and book series:

  • Akiko
  • Meridian
  • The Adventures of Tintin
  • Ultimate Spider-Man
  • Maus
  • Goodbye Chunky Rice
  • Clan Apis
  • Scary Godmother
  • Electric Girl
  • The Tale of One Bad Rat
  • Castle Waiting
  • Camelot 3000
  • Dignifying Science
