Question: Procrastination on School Project

My daughter has a big project due after school vacation and she just will not get started on it. She is in 5th grade. What should I do?

Hi Georgia- Have you tried talking to her about why she is not starting the project... is it too daunting? Maybe if you help her come up with a plan to break out the process into chunks it would feel less overwhelming. For research I find that buying different colored highlighters and index cards and encouraging the child to break the topic into sections and then color coat the information accordingly helps the process immensely. All that said, maybe she just wants a break from school and you could say that on Thursday of vacation you are going to set aside a few hours for her to get started. The thing is that at 5th grade she is entering those middle school years and needs to learn how to manage her time. As hard as it is for parents, sometimes that means letting their child scramble, not do as well as they would like for a grade... then learn from their mistake that they should not wait until the last minute. Bottom line is that you don't want to do the project for them.
