Question: School Support Organization vs. PTO

I would like to know the guidelines to setting up a school support organization instead of a PTO. I have been told it is less complicated, cost less monies, and this sounds like what is needed in my son's middle school in Tennessee to help with funding academics, music, art and other needed school activities. My son is in the gifted program and parents fund all activities. The school principal has allowed me to do research and has agreed to my and other parents.
