Texting in Class? No Problem.

At least that's the trend in this Australian district where -- due to new technology -- kids are being encouraged to text away right under the teacher's nose.

This application sounds pretty powerful, but -- man -- can i think of about 89 ways kidscan use this particular tech advancement to create havoc in the class. Call me a Luddite (or a former high school teacher who liked order), but I suspect there's a long way to go and a lot of safeguards needed before this trend takes hold.

I am a 17 year old Senior at a highschool in Kansas and while I am guilty of the occassional text in the classroom I do not like it when kids are constantly pulling out the cell phones in class and texting like the teacher's word doesn't matter. Sure, if my phone goes off atleast 3 times within 5 minutes i will check it, but i rarely reply. I see students pull them out every 3 minutes and ignore the lesson plan. Then they go to the people, who were actually paying attention, to repeat what the teacher is talking about. It's a problem that is grade effecting and show lack of self-dicsipline . While, I understand that this Activexpression is involved with the education, I do not agree that it is something that it should be a permanent installment. Students these days are disconnecting themselves to 'traditional learning' and plugging into 'newer' and 'easier' ways to get an educational experience. What's wrong with the "old" way? I'd rather have a teacher-to-stud ent discussion about the subject than a student-to-comp uter estimate.
