I pay my 11 year old son one dollar for every A on his report card. Fifty cents for B's and twenty-five cents for every C. He loses twenty-five cents for D's and fifty cents for F's. If he makes the honor roll it is an extra two dollars and Honorable Mention an extra one dollar. If he makes straight A's (which he hasn't made yet) he will get an extra five dollars. He has his own savings account and he also takes his money and buys his school clothes or books or whatever he may want or need. He learns about saving and spending all the while encouraging good grades. He has ADD so this seemed to really help him get good grades and stay at a very steady pace.I will gladly keep it up if that is the little push that he might need it is worth the cost.

When I was growing up we were paid for A's & B's; nothing for C's; and we had to pay Dad for D's & F's. Our payments were 1.00 to .50 either direction. We did try hard to avoid paying Dad but I liked school and it was important to do well anyway. My brother? Not so much, so I think the added incentitive helped him.

In my own opinion, I think it is a good idea to pay them for them to be inspired to study. However, it should not be for always since they will not be motivated on their own to achieve a better grade.- Teacher Lulu (Red Apple Out-of-School Care, Edmonton)

I really Belive that it is a Great Incentive for the child helping to Push them further into their growth of learning. It really helps them with the value of the dollar for they can recongnize that the monies are growing because of doing their Best in school.

I found the introduction to the article poorly written. The line, "Shouldn’t kids get good grades because they’ve worked hard?" is illogical. Whether kids get paid for the grades they earn or not, they've worked hard to get them. The issue is if that hard work should be rewarded and if so should it be rewarded with cash from parents. Please have your editors check for logic in the pieces to be published. Thank you.

It undermines intrinsic motivation- use of extrinsic rewards isn't the best idea. Although, who wouldn't be motivated to do homework if you get a big chuck of cash for it? Whatever it takes I guess, but don't be surprised if the $20 for A's doesn't work after awhile...

Any parent that thinks "a walk in the park" or a trip to an ice cream shop is reward for good grades is living in the 1950s. A walk in the park with me & my husband is more of a punishment for my kids than a reward. It's just the way it is in the year 2012. My daughter wouldn't be caught dead with me even at the mall, as I also wouldn't at her age with my mom.

I used to reward, not pay, my children for good grades until I realized that I was doing them a disservice. That is not good parenting in my estimation. Hard work and diligence is what gets the good grade. My reward when I received good grades was a boost of confidence to my ego and me feeling capable and in control of my life. That's the reward. I did not realize that good work habits as a child form into good habits that adults need in order to live a fulfilled life and to contribute their gift to society.

We do offer $5 for every A and take a dollar away for anything below a B average. Kids look forward to their report cards every semester and I am usually shelling out $30 - $60 per report card. We do not offer allowances for their daily chores such as keeping their rooms clean, dishwasher, setting the table, etc. Hubby and I both agree that these are daily necessities to life anyway. However they do get special praise and get to do fun things as long as the grades are up. I would refuse to sign my kids up on an afternoon program like baseball if he is not doing well in school which in our household is Family and School are both priority number one. This may not work for others but it sure works for us.

I have not paid my kids but see no problem with it. My dad paid us $100 if we got straight A's on our report cards. I don't recall getting anything for anything less. I would do it for my kids if their ever make straight A's. My kids work better with activities as incentives though.
