French Bread Bake

Since this recipe must chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour—or overnight—it's perfect to assemble in advance and then place in the oven to bake just in time for guests to arrive.

  • 1 loaf white bread (1 inch thick slices) slices
  • 8 eggs
  • 1 cup of cream
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • Topping: 6 ounces butter; 1 cup brown sugar; 3 tablespoons maple syrup; 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon; and 8 ounces pecans (optional)
  • Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
    2. Layer bread slices in a baking dish. overlapping the pieces.
    3. Mix eggs, cream, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and pour over the bread. Put in fridge for 1 hour or overnight.
    4. For topping, combine the butter, brown sugar, pecans, syrup, and cinnamon. Just before baking, sprinkle topping over bread and mixture.
    5. Bake for 30 minutes, until bubbly.
