Quick Lunchbox Snacks and Sides

The ingredients listed here are ideas for various lunchbox snacks. Small servings with many choices works for kids because variety is key to healthy eating. Providing your child with plenty of options is not hard to do or time consuming; many lunch foods can be prepared in advance in large quantities. Each morning, simply fill up small containers with some of the different foods listed in the ingredients list.

  • apples and carrots
  • applesauce (no sugar added)
  • celery sticks
  • cream cheese
  • sugar snap peas
  • yogurt (or a smoothie)
  • ranch dressing
  • lunch meat
  • asparagus, cooked
  • hard-boiled egg
  • cheese, cubed, or string cheese
  • peanut butter or sunflower butter
  • white bean dip or hummus
  • mini pita breads
  • whole grain crackers or pretzels
  • trail mix (homemade; see below)
  • raisins
  • Directions

    1. Use any of the following healthy snack ideas for your child's school lunchbox—and enlist your child's help in coming up with your own combinations!
    2. cut-up pieces of dried or fresh fruit, or a piece of whole fruit
    3. celery sticks filled with cream cheese and raisins, or white bean dip
    4. sugar snap peas with a small container of ranch dressing for dipping
    5. lunch meat roll-ups with cream cheese and asparagus in the middle, held together with toothpicks
    6. a hard boiled egg
    7. cheese cubes or string cheese sticks
    8. peanut butter (or sunflower butter) and apple slices or crackers
    9. white bean dip or hummus with carrots and mini pita breads
    10. whole grain crackers or pretzels
    11. trail mix made from cereal, nuts, and dried fruit (or see our Trail Mix recipe)
