Try these variations to this delicious stew: Dredge the beef in flour and saute in olive oil before adding to the slow cooker. Also, add a savory spice, such as cumin, cloves or paprika, for even more flavor.
1/2 pound of stew beef (can be sauteed first, if desired; see Directions)
3-4 potatoes, chopped
2 cloves garlic, sliced or whole (whole clove yields more subtle flavor)
3-4 carrots, chopped
3-4 stalks of celery, chopped
1 large onion, sliced
splash of Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup of beef broth (ideally, low sodium)
2 bay leaves
salt and pepper to taste
peas, optional (add at end, once stew is cooked)
Directions
Simply add all ingredients to the slow cooker, stir to mix briefly, and cook, covered, on low for 8 hours. (Note: Do not add beef if sautéing it first.)
Serve with sliced crusty bread, such as a French loaf.
