I love reading the Hank the Cowdog series out loud. Sometimes I end up laughing harder than my kids do at the crazy things said in the books (like "Fuzzy Bubbles"). My kids love reading the books on their own as well.
My daughter really enjoys the Breyer horse chapter books, Sally and Dick books, American Girl books, and I know poetry is not a chapter book but books like Where the Sidewalk Ends are great too.
I love the Little House books too - unfortunately my kids didn't get into them. They say the trick is to find a book that you enjoy reading and that the kids like. Sometimes that took us a few tries. Erin, Lost on a Mountain in Maine is a true story about a boy who is hiking Katahdin with his family and doesn't stay with them- and is lost for almost 2 weeks! My kids were enthralled to hear about what the boy did to survive. Obviously for older kids, but a definitely good read for families who hike!
Yes! Little House books. There is actually going to be a Little House interpretation at my daughter's school in Feb. Thanks for reminding me.
Lisa, What is Lost on the Woods about? Never read it!
We read the Little House books-- for me it was fun to re-read something I read as a kid and my kids loved them because their lives are so different from modern day.
These are the books we have enjoyed reading aloud to our daughter:
Chalotte's Web,
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,
Phantom Tollbooth,
Fantastic Mr. Fox,
Paddington Bear Books.
Classics Abridged like Jane Eyre and Peter Pan
