ESL, or English as a Second Language, is a program with specific techniques and curriculum to teach students who are English-language learners the language skills they need for success, including listening, speaking, reading and writing, study skills, vocabulary, and even local culture. ESL instruction is conducted almost entirely in English, with little or no use of students’ native language. It is sometimes referred to as ESOL, or English for Speakers of Other Languages.
